How social media helped build Mayor Nenshi's brand
ZINC presentation shares lessons learned from Nenshi campaign
Branding, personal and otherwise, has been around since the dawn of civilization, when symbols, rituals and the design of our buildings and communities first began to help define and convey humankind's diverse identities. What's different today, says ZINC Research president Brian F. Singh, is how much farther and faster our brands can be communicated to those around us - and never more so than with the emergence of social media. "In today's hyper-connected world, brands can emerge fast but still require a solid strategy and discipline," Singh says. "You can create your own brand, whether for your career or in your personal life, and if you don't, someone else might do it for you - positively or negatively. The more you understand the tools and processes of social media, the more likely you'll be able to use them to your advantage."
Building on the example of Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi's election campaign, as well as his own experience, Singh delivered the keynote address on personal branding for a social media panel and workshop presented by the Calgary branch of the International Association of Business Communicators. During the run-up to the election last fall, Singh served as Mayor Nenshi's pollster and one of his campaign strategists. He is also a long-time analyst of social media trends in Canada and describes himself a social media evangelist. "I really do love this stuff," he says. "Social media is a key part of my business as well as my social life."
His presentation, designed primarily for this event's audience comprising business professionals as well as students, offered insights on how Neshi used social media to define himself and his political brand to the city's electorate and around the world - not only by enhancing and extending the reach of his messages, but also in combating negative perceptions before they could gain momentum.
